West New York Slips By Livingston

WNY American 4 – Livingston 3

July 24, 2008, Ridgefield, NJ – The WNY Americans opened sectional play with a 4-3 win over previously unbeaten and District 8 champion Livingston American. Playing as the visiting team again, WNY struck for 3 runs in the top of the first inning courtesy of a three-run home run by third baseman Laz Lopez. Anthony Martinez added a solo shot in the top of the fifth to account for the other WNY run.
Martinez also shone on the mound, striking out 7 and shutting out the powerful Livingston offense for 5 scoreless innings. When Martinez reached his pitch count limit after 5 innings, and WNY had to turn to its bullpen, Livingston made things interesting. Livingston began a two-out rally with 5 straight hits, before WNY reliever Gregory Cuevas induced Livingston’s Matt Gibbon to ground to WNY first baseman Daniel De la Rosa for the game’s final out.
WNY now meets District 6 champion Little Ferry/South Hackensack, a 10-2 winner over District 5 Champ Rutherford American, on Friday night, while Livingston takes on Rutherford, in second round matchups.

CHAMPIONS!

July 19, 2008, Secaucus, NJ – The WNY Americans were crowned District 7 Champions in the 9-10 year-old baseball division on Saturday night as they defeated Secaucus 8-4. Secaucus, winners of 5 straight, had advanced to the Championship game out of the loser’s bracket, and looked to continue its streak, scoring 3 times in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead, after shortstop Anthony Martinez hit an inside the park home run to drive in WNY’s first two runs.
But the undefeated West New York team struck again for 3 runs in the top of the second to take back a lead that they would never relinquish. First baseman Daniel De la Rosa scored on pitcher Gregory Cuevas’s fielder’s choice, center fielder Brandon Saurborn scored on Martinez’s sacrifice to center, and third baseman Laz Lopez singled in Cuevas.
West New York plated two more runs in the 4th inning as catcher Derrick Fernandez, who had a great tournament at the plate with another 3-for-4 performance, scored on De la Rosa’s sacrifice and Saurborn worked a bases-loaded walk to force in Lopez.
Cuevas, WNY’s starting pitcher, struck out 8 to earn the win. After Cuevas reached his pitch-count limit, J.J. Berdecia came on relief in the fifth and struck out the third batter to end the inning after De la Rosa made a sparkling unassisted double play on a hard liner to first base.
That set the stage for an exciting sixth. WNY added another run in the top of the inning as second baseman Chris Rey singled in J.J. Berdecia. Secaucus tried to rally in the home half of the inning, sendinf seven batters to the plate. But Berdecia got two strikeouts around two walks – the second of which gave Secaucus its 4th run – and with bases still loaded induced the final batter to ground into a 6-5 force at third to end the game.
West New York now advances to the Region 2 Tournament in Ridgefield and takes on the District 8 Champion on Thursday evening at 8 p.m.

The path to the championship:

July 7, 2008, Secaucus, NJ – The West New York Americans advanced in the winner’s bracket of the District 7 Tournament with a hard-fought curfew-shortened 5-inning victory over Bayonne National. Anthony Martinez hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the second and West New York built a six-run lead on a Bayonne team that had scored at least 15 runs in its first two games. Derrick Fernandez continued swinging a hot bat, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs. WNY’s Gregory Cuevas held Bayonne scoreless until giving up a monstrous 2-run home run to Bayonne’s Andrew Davella with one out in the top of the 5th. Cuevas struck out the next batter and Laz Lopez came on in relief to get the final out and preserve the victory for West New York

July 12, 2008, West New York, NJ – The West New York Americans clawed their way to a 5-1 victory over a strong Roberto Clemente team to advance out of the winner’s bracket to the District 7 finals.
